Around 70 relevant stakeholders participated in the closing event that was carried out successfully in the city of Medellin on December 1st, 2016.

“We don’t intend to bring magic solutions to get rid of the waste, but we really want to help fix the social and environmental problem that affect the city, because we believe in Medellin,” said Fernando Centeno, Head of Research Planning at Exergy.

More than 15% of the waste disposed of in La Pradera is recyclable material. Additionally, more than £12 million could be saved without counting on social and economic costs, improving the quality of life for Medellin’s inhabitants.

The results of the project caught the attention of the attendees who discussed alternatives to solve the current situation.“There is public interest in continuing with a second stage for the waste2energy Medellin project,” said Johann Martinez from CIDET. It would be possible to count on the support of local authorities such as Antioquia Government, Medellin’s County, The Metropolitan Area, EPM, and EMVARIAS among others.

On November 28th and 29th was carried out the First Non-Conventional Renewable Energies Forum in the city of Barranquilla- Colombia. Fernando Centeno- Exergy, on behalf of the waste2energy Medellin consortium, presented the experience of the project as well as the integrated solution proposal for the municipal solid waste treatment and its use for energy production.

Likewise, the consortium met on Monday 28th with the company AAA, a private organisation in charge of the collection, disposition, aqueduct and sewage services of Barranquilla who would be interested in developing a project for the use and recovery of municipal solid waste materials in this city and its metropolitan area.

On July 25th 2016, the technical teams of Exergy, EIA University and CIDET developed a meeting with EPM which is one of the leading utility companies in Colombia. This meeting was held with the purpose of presenting the project and to request relevant information in order to carry out analysis of this information based on the project’s methodology.

The results of the meeting were favourable, giving a green light to one of the most important objectives of the project.

Ruta N is the organisation in charge of improving the capabilities of companies to enhance their innovative conditions.

On July 19th a meeting between Ruta N, EIA University and CIDET was held to request a loan for an auditorium in Ruta N for the development of the workshop at the end of this year, probably between November and December, and to develop further activities that allow an easy communication process as local and global levels.

On July 18th 2016, CIDET presented the project to the Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council – Colombia (WTERT Colombia) and to The Colombian Association of Engineers – Antioquia Chapter (ACIEM).

The meeting was attended by Eng. Álvaro García, director of WTERT Colombia, and Eng. Hugo Ospina, director of ACIEM Antioquia chapter, and by engineers of CIDET, Mónica Montoya, Daniel Chica, Carlos Andrés Álvarez and Johann Carlos Ramírez.

WTERT Colombia belongs to The Global Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council (WTERT), located at Columbia University, New York. WTERT aims to bring together engineers, scientists and managers from industry and universities to identify the best available energy from waste (EFW), technologies for recovery of energy or fuels from solid waste. A long with organisations in several countries around the world, including Germany, Brazil, China, Japan, the United Kingdom and many more. WTERT is a global resource for those who want to learn more about Waste to Energy, its use, and its role in society.

ACIEM is the professional association of Colombian Engineering whose mission is to work for the professional and scientific development of its engineers and act as Technical Advisory Body of the National Government of Colombia (Law 51/86) in the areas of education, energy, telecommunications, electronics, environment, mechanics, among others.

As a result of this intervention, WTERT Colombia invited the consortium to publish the scope of the project on the website of this organisation (http://www.wtert.org.co/). They can also support the project with information available from The Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council (http://www.seas.columbia.edu/earth/wtert/) founded by the Earth Engineering Centre of Columbia University.

In order to identify and consolidate spaces for the dissemination of the project Waste to Energy Medellin. CIDET participated in the construction and feedback study of Waste to Energy made by Tecnnova within the strategy “Observatorio CT+i of Ruta N” for the city of Medellin known as INNRUTA (Competitive Intelligence Network), in order to discuss generalities and identify technologies, markets and opportunities related to this topic.

The sessions were held from June 3rd to July 21st 2016. CIDET identified several stakeholders for this topic in the city of Medellin. Also, it presented the project scope and it was selected to be part of the reference studies of Waste to Energy in the city.

Two Colombian institutions, CIDET and University EIA, and a UK-based company, Exergy Ltd, have come together to identify the most feasible, environmentally friendly, and suitable methods for waste treatment and energy generation in Medellin, Colombia.

“Medellin needs an urgent solution! Approximately 70.000 tons of solid waste are generated every month with a cost of £644,700 for its inhabitants and in the next decade they would need around £200 million to expand and build new landfills. Why not use these waste and economic resources to generate energy instead?” says Fernando Centeno, Head of the Research Planning at Exergy Ltd.

This project, funded by Prosperity Fund UK, is a pioneering initiative in Latin America since the innovative and well-known Exergy Assessment Methodology will be applied for the first time in Medellin with the potential for ground-breaking results.

The Exergy Methodology, developed by leading R&D organisations, is a revolutionary concept that combines the optimal use of scarce resources such as energy, water, and materials and minimizes the emissions of CO2 and other contaminants. A pilot study in a group of facilities in Twin Cities, Minnesota showed that the exergy performance could be increased by 64%, CO2 emissions reduced by 39%, and ground water reduced by 73%.

This initiative will generate significant environmental and economic benefits to Medellin such as a reduction in CO2 by 20%, an ROI within less than 10 years, and additionally create thousands of jobs for the construction, waste treatment, and renewable energy sectors.

“We believe that collaboration between the local authorities and the key stakeholders is essential for this project’s success. In order to facilitate this project, there must be a favourable political and economic environment. The ultimate goal is to build the first Waste-to-Energy Plant in Latin America together with the support and engagement of the citizens of Medellin,” says Gustavo Martinez, Project Manager at Exergy Ltd.

The project called “New Technologies for Waste Treatment and Energy Generation that Helps Accelerate Colombia’s Transition to a Low Carbon Economy” is funded by The Foreign & Commonwealth Office – FCO from the UK Government through the “Colombia Prosperity Fund 2016” program.

“The Project will generate and establish technical procedures (design and operation), interactive maps, and points of reference that will be used to identify the most suitable solution for the treatment of urban solid waste generated in the city of Medellin covering the three pillars of sustainability: society, environment, and economy. The most important yet, a financial investment plan will be prepared which will be discussed and adjusted with the key stakeholders in Medellin. Additionally, CHP or CCHP technologies will be evaluated and appropriated; these technologies allow an efficient use of waste produced in cities to generate heat, cold, or electricity through systems known around the world as Waste to Energy plants which are useful in residential or industrial buildings”, states Johann Ramirez, a professional in Experimental Development, who represents CIDET in the project.

The initiative will be developed in partnership with Exergy Ltd, a UK company with expertise in engineering and technology, with international experience in the development, design, construction, and operation of projects that contribute to a low carbon sustainable future. The methodology will be based on Annex 49 which is defined as an evaluation of Exergy that has been developed by R&D organisations such as the Energy International Agency, Ramirez explains.

Universidad EIA is also participating in the Project who will count on the support of Ruta N during the 10 months of execution. The purpose is to participate in a second call and continue working on the project on a second stage.

“What we expect for the future is to develop a Business Line in Colombia in the Waste to Energy topic and then develop this kind of project in South America. CIDET needs to be at the vanguard of the world’s technology in regards to Energy which may not be regarded as Energy anymore,but Exergy, for the energetic sector and a sustainable society. These initiatives allow diversifying the energetic matrix of a country in the long term while facing the landfill problem which is an immediate issue to solve” says Johann Ramirez.
